Functional Movement Screening (FMS)
Functional movement screening is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function. As part of your initial evaluation, FMS is utilized to quickly identify dangerous movement patterns so that they can be addressed. This ultimately works towards turning your weaknesses into strengths.
Functional movement screening is performed by a licensed physical therapist who is trained in FMS. Your therapist will take you through the screen and design specific, corrective exercises to reduce your risk for injury. The goal is essentially to identify and eliminate your weakest link in order to prevent injury and to optimize your performance.
Running is one of the most popular athletic activities in the world. There are probably more runners than there are participants in any other sport.
Running is also the most dangerous sport, because compared to other athletes, 2 out of 3 runners get injured every year. But it doesn’t have to be that way, you can minimize potential of injures and maximize your efforts by simply learning how to run.
Proper technique is the cornerstone of every sports discipline or any other activity that involves human movement: dancing, ballet, martial arts, tennis, etc. Running is no different. So in order to run faster, run longer, avoid injuries & reduce impact on your body – you need to improve your technique.
THE POSE METHOD® OF RUNNING
The Pose Method® is a system for teaching running developed by a 2-time Olympic Coach Dr. Nicholas S. Romanov in 1977 in the former Soviet Union. The name of the method comes from the word “pose” or “body position”. This is a proven system that will allow you to run faster, farther, and more efficiently with fewer injuries.
SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN RESULTS
The Pose Method® has become a standard part of the U.S. Army‘s core training regimen. Hundreds of servicemen and women, responsible for the physical training and rehabilitation plans for Soldiers who are injured in Basic Combat Training, are Pose Method® Certified Technique Specialists.
“The injury rates (for Soldiers) from overuse alone are substantial. We prevent the majority of them just by teaching Soldiers to run…”
Staff Sgt. Aaron Cheateaux
Headquarters and Headquarters Company,
8th Military Police Brigade
Aside from the qualitative results from runners adopting Pose, its benefits have also been proven scientifically. One such study published in 2004 by “Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise,” found that the Pose Method® reduces stress on the knees by 53%. While this is just one of many studies, it is significant because the knee is, arguably, the most frequent site of injury among runners.
